Business Owners

Financial guidance designed specifically for business owners who want to build personal wealth, protect their business and plan for what comes next.

Running a business well does not automatically mean your personal finances are in good shape

Business owners face a financial complexity that most individuals never encounter. Your personal and business finances are closely connected. Your wealth is often concentrated in a single asset. And your eventual exit from the business may be the most significant financial event of your life. We help you manage all of this.

By Collaborative Consulting

Most business owners are so focused on running their company that personal financial planning gets pushed down the list. We work alongside business owners to make sure the personal side of their finances gets the attention it deserves, alongside the business itself.

Whether you are in the early stages of building your business or planning your exit, we have the experience and expertise to help you make the right decisions at every stage.

Our services for business owners

We provide specialist financial advice for business owners across every stage of the business lifecycle.

Build personal wealth that is independent of your business. We help you diversify, structure your drawings efficiently and plan for the future beyond your company.

Protect your business against the risks that matter most, including key person loss, shareholder disputes and business debt obligations.

A comprehensive financial plan that looks at your business and personal finances together and builds a coherent strategy across both.

Why Choose Collaborative Consulting

Specialist financial advice for the unique complexity of business ownership

We take a whole-of-life view of your finances. That means looking at your business and personal balance sheet together and identifying the opportunities and risks that a purely personal adviser or a purely business adviser would miss. We have worked with business owners across New Zealand for over 30 years.

Personal wealth built alongside your business

We help you build an investment portfolio and retirement plan that grows independently of your business, so your long-term financial security does not depend entirely on one company.

With clients invested across more than 45 countries, we provide access to a globally diversified portfolio that most individuals could not build on their own.

We work with your accountant to review your drawings, salary and dividend structure to make sure you are extracting value from your business in the most efficient way possible.

Business owners often need both personal and business insurance. We look at both together to make sure there are no gaps and that your total protection package makes sense.

When should I start building personal wealth outside my business?

The earlier the better. Many business owners wait until they sell before thinking seriously about personal wealth. By then, a lot of opportunity has been missed. We help you build a personal investment strategy that runs alongside your business, so that when you do exit, you have a strong financial foundation already in place. Starting early also gives you more options around the timing and structure of your exit.

The right protection depends on your business structure, your key people and your obligations. At a minimum, most business owners need key person insurance, a clear shareholder agreement and appropriate business debt protection. We assess your specific situation and recommend a protection strategy that covers the risks that matter most for your business. We also coordinate with your solicitor to make sure the legal and insurance structures are aligned.

Your business is likely your most significant asset. But it is also illiquid, concentrated and dependent on your continued involvement. We help you think through how your business fits into your retirement plan, including when and how you might exit, what the proceeds might look like and how to bridge the gap between what the business will provide and what you actually need. We also make sure you are building other assets alongside the business so you are not entirely dependent on one exit event.

Yes. We work with business owners in the years leading up to a sale to make sure their personal financial plan is ready to receive and deploy the proceeds effectively. That includes investment strategy, tax considerations and retirement planning. We can also help you think through the structuring of the sale itself, working alongside your accountant and legal adviser to make sure the outcome is as efficient as possible from a personal financial perspective.
